BREST, FRANCE-(16-7-2003) With conditions in complete contrast to the last week of racing the
International 470 class conducted their first ever Sprint Cup.
The Sprint Cup brought together the Top 4 Men & Top 3 Women teams from the
freshly completed 2003 European Championships in a 3 x twenty minute
race/no Drop format in what turned out to be fantastic sailing conditions.
After a week of no more than 12 knots, teams were faced with 15-18 knots
and beautiful flat water on the Bay of Brest and with 5000 euro prize money
on the line teams were looking to make early wins.
American Silver Medalists Paul Foerster & Kevin Burnham took first blood
and with a second , Spanish Silver Medallist Natalia Via duFresne with
Sandra Azon showed that the woman were the equal of the Men in these
conditions.
In the end, looking like they were enjoying the conditions the most , johan
Molund & Matin Andersson came from a race 1 sixth place to win the final 2
heats to take the Prize money.
Nic Rogers & Joe Glandfield of the UK were unlucky to just miss out and
take 2nd place to the Swedish by countback both on 8 points from the three
races. Newly crowned European Champions Gildas Phillipe & Nicolas
LeBerre were just 1 point back in 3rd .
The Sprint Cup will be shown on Eurosport in the future and on
Watersportworld to 250 Million homes around the World.
